The theme for 2024 is “the stage and beyond”: The dancers\, choreographers\, and educators in this remarkable group of honorees are invested in work that often transcends the proscenium. \nA ceremony to recognize this year’s recipients will be held in New York City at Baryshnikov Arts on Monday\, December 2\, at 7 pm EST\, with performances and presentations for each. Brown’s\, “Gate Keepers” is a story of homage\, celebration\, and an acknowledgment of conscious continuity\, interconnectedness\, history\, tradition\, and perseverance. “Pretty Is Skin Deep\, Ugly to the Bone” by Talley Beatty is a modern jazz ballet in his usual style of inner-city interaction and challenge; and Harold Pierson’s “Roots & Reflections” celebrates 100 years of African American dance history. \nAcross the nation and around the world\, PHILADANCO! is celebrated for its innovation\, creativity\, and preservation of primarily African-American traditions in dance. Over the course of the holiday season\, unfortunately there has been an uptick in positive COVID-19 cases prompting the closing of over 80 schools and Businesses in Philadelphia. The health and safety of our dancers\, staff members and all who enter our facility is of the utmost importance.   Philadanco as an organization follows all the CDC COVID-19 protocols. \nFor precautionary measures Philadanco’s Artistic Administration has decided to postpone the upcoming In-Person Company Audition Sunday\, January 9\, 2022. Please send your resume\, headshot\, and dance/performance reels to be reviewed by the Artistic Team. DESCRIPTION:https://www.kimmelcenter.org/events-and-tickets/202021/kcp/philadanco-strange-fruit/\nOverview\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStrange Fruit is an excerpt from New Fruit\, a ballet choreographed by Christopher Huggins\, which gives audiences a glimpse into the unchanged landscape of the cycle of sanctioned violence on Black/Brown bodies in America. This moving meditation physicalizes lynching\, or Strange Fruit\, as described in the 1939 song recording by Billie Holiday. “We are still smelling strange fruit in 2020. When will the scent of this strange fruit become the perfume of justice?” asks creator Christopher Huggins\, who is a former member of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This haunting and beautiful piece was re-imagined off the stage by dancer William Burden and was filmed locally\, in a Philadelphia park. Philadanco’s Burden says tapping into this horrific place in American history was no easy feat as an African American dancer; however\, he was forced to dig deeply to touch the rage and sorrow of his ancestors. \nSteaming now until February 28\, 2021
