SUMMARY:THEN & NOW!
DESCRIPTION:For over 55 years\, PHILADANCO! has electrified audiences with its distinct blend of virtuosity\, urgency\, and heart. Then & Now is a sweeping celebration of that legacy honoring the iconic works that shaped the company’s past while boldly embracing the voices transforming its future. \nThe program revisits two classic ballets: Donald Byrd’s Everybody\, a propulsive\, biting meditation on rhythm from 1996 that still hits with startling relevance\, by a Tony-nominated and Bessie Award-winning choreographer known for bold work that redefines contemporary dance. Tommie-Waheed Evans’ WITH(IN)VERSE\, created in 2018\, offers a searing emotional portrait of vulnerability and spiritual transformation through movement – crafted by a Guggenheim Fellow whose work merges Blackness and raw physicality. Experience the continual growth of PHILADANCO! as a living archive where legacy and reinvention move side by side. \n\nTwo new commissions further push the company’s trajectory forward: a Company Premiere by the world renowned Ronald K. Brown\, whose signature fusion of West African forms and modern dance once again finds new depth within the PHILADANCO! ensemble; and introducing a World Premiere by rising choreographic force Juel D. Lane\, whose kinetic style brings a youthful\, urgent edge to the stage. \nAt once reverent and forward-looking\, Then & Now is more than a milestone; it continues a declaration of where Black dance has been\, and where it dares go next. \nAcross the nation and around the world\, PHILADANCO! is celebrated for its innovation\, creativity\, and preservation of primarily African American traditions in dance. \n\n\nFriday | Dec 5\, 2025\n7:30pm\n\n\nSaturday | Dec 6\, 2025\n2:00pm\n\n\nSaturday | Dec 6\, 2025\n7:30pm\n\n\nSunday | Dec 7\, 2025\n2:00pm\n\n\nTake a look behind the scenes:\n\n“Heirborne” by Juel D. SUMMARY:EXPLOSIVE: Bold New Works on the Rise
DESCRIPTION:PHILADANCO! once again ignites the stage with EXPLOSIVE: Bold New Works on the Rise\, a high-voltage evening celebrating fresh choreographic voices\, making their debut for the company. Four dynamic artists…Four daring visions…One powerhouse ensemble ready to burn the house down. \nThis isn’t just a program of premieres it’s a seismic shift. Each work reveals a new dimension of the PHILADANCO! dancers\, challenging the boundaries of form\, feeling\, and fire. From razor-sharp technical physicality to lush musicality\, this is where legacy meets the “next wave.” \nThe spring series is a bold invitation: Come witness what happens when tradition opens its arms to risk. Because the next generation isn’t waiting. It’s here. and it’s explosive. \nWithout Witness  \nChoreography by Thang Dao \nA contemporary dance work that traces a quiet liberation from inherited constraints\, moving from collective searching toward embodied freedom. Through rhythm\, breath\, and attentive presence\, the choreography listens more than it declares\, allowing movement to emerge without demand or display. What remains is a shared return to motion as truth\, unmeasured\, unguarded\, and alive. \nPassing Through Stillness  \nWorld Premiere \nChoreography by Nicole Clarke-Springer \nNicole Clarke-Springer invites us into a transformative threshold—the moment when one recognizes their point of “genius” and chooses to move forward with clarity\, integrity\, and purpose. This work is not about arrival\, but about awakening: a deeply personal reckoning where instinct\, discipline\, and spirit converge. \nBlue \nChoreography by Christopher Huggins \n“He\, who is at once a boy and man\, grace and power\, exist between ocean and sky and the enormity of blue” – James Frazier \nBlue is a choreographed meditation about manhood. This dance speaks about how males emerge fresh and unspoiled from the protected enviornment of their mother’s womb\, yet as they grow toward adulthood they begin to slowly wrap themselves in various layers of blue. The journey to adulthood is complicated. We as men fight our way through various objective and subjective obstacles\, and become many things along the way; corrupted\, aggressive\, sexy\, untrusting\, sensuous\, passionate\, and still remain vulnerable and naked in our own inflated sensitivity. PHILADANCO paints the many shades of “Blue” through simple pantomime\, technical athleticism\, passion and unpredictable rage. \nTemple Without Prayers \nChoreography by Roderick George \nTemple Without Prayers becomes a poetic mediation on this paradox. The “temple” symbolizes a nation imagined as sacred ground—a place of sanctuary\, promise\, and power. Yet within this space\, prayer transforms into a symbol of exhaustion and disillusionment\, revealing the fragile hope placed in systems that repeatedly fail to protect and uplift those who helped build them. Through movement\, the work asks: what happens when faith in the structure dissolves\, and the body becomes the site of truth\, resistance\, and liberation? In that moment\, the temple no longer requires prayer—it becomes a place of remembering\, reckoning\, and reclaiming power.
